Dust Particles (07 May)

Electron Microscope image of Quartz particle originating from the Sahara, collected in Venice by Prof. Emanuela Molinaroli, Ca’ Foscari University.

The Scirocco wind carries Saharan dust particles over the Mediterranean Sea. Prof. Emanuela Molinaroli has devised a simple bottle system to collect the dust particles that make it to Venice. Saharan dust particles can be differentiated from more local debris by their shape. Having collided over longer periods of time, each particle is distinctively round compared with more local counterparts.
